| What
is DSL?
PhilCom DSL (Digital
Subscriber Line) is a service that offers a faster Internet connection
than a standard dial-up connection. DSL technology uses existing 2-wire
copper telephone wiring to deliver high-speed data services to homes and
businesses.
DSL uses the existing phone line and in most cases does not require an
additional phone line. This gives "always-on" Internet access
and does not tie up the phone line. No more busy signals, no more dropped
connections, no more waiting for someone in the household to get off the
phone. DSL offers users a choice of speeds ranging from 160 Kbps to 2
Mbps. This is 2x to 50x times faster than a standard 56Kbps dial-up modem.
Today PhilCom DSL is for the first time putting high-speed Internet access
within the reach of the home, small and medium-size businesses. PhilCom
DSL takes existing voice cables that connect customer premises to the
phone company's Central Office (CO) and turns them into a high-speed digital
link.

What
can I do with PhilCom DSL?
The PhilCom DSL connection
is a dedicated link. Unlike ISDN and analogue modem connections, the PhilCom
DSL connection is up 24 hours a day. This gives you some additional options
like running servers.
Can
I network with PhilCom DSL?
Yes. You can share
your PhilCom DSL among computers within a small network using a proxy
server. The server software and hardware should be capable of IP masking
and Firewall and includes an Ethernet hub (10Base-T or 10/100Base-T).
Can I run my own servers?
Yes, you can run your
own DNS, mail, or web servers.
Can
PhilCom DSL subscribers still use their telephone if they have PhilCom
DSL?
Yes, PhilCom DSL subscribers
can still use their existing phone line for voice communications while
they use DSL service for Internet access or data communications simultaneously.
Traditional analog voice band modems use the same frequency band, 0-4
kilohertz (kHz), as telephone service, preventing concurrent voice and
data use. Because the new PhilCom DSL modems operate at frequencies above
the voice channel from 100 Khz to 1.1 Megahertz (MHz), Plain Old Telephone
Service (POTS) and DSL data service can operate concurrently. By using
the same telephone line, there's no need to get a new telephone number
to use your DSL service. Moreover, PhilCom DSL modems are designed so
that your normal telephone service will operate even if the DSL modem
is unplugged or otherwise disabled.
Can I convert an existing line to PhilCom DSL
or do I need a new telephone line?
In many cases you can
convert an existing telephone line to a DSL line. In this case the POTS
phone number and billing would remain the same and any existing special
services on the line would also remain unchanged (like call-waiting, message
center, etc.). In some case, a new line has to be installed because of
load coils or other DSL-unfriendly devices.
How much do i have to pay to have a PhilCom
DSL Connection?
One time Installation
Charge of Php 1,000.00.

How
am I billed?
DSL service is billed
per month, for a fixed price, and for unlimited usage. In other words,
whether you use it for email once a day, or you use it constantly, your
bill is always the same. Your telephone calls will be billed as-is ,on
a per call basis. Both details will show in a single bill.
Are there applications that do not work well
over DSL?
Yes. Some types of
two-way video conferencing and other sustainable high-bandwidth transfers
do not work well on DSL outside of local loop because the flow of data
from these applications is packet-based. But within PhilCom DSL network,
video conferencing will work.
What limitations or restrictions
are there for DSL?
The DSL end-user must
be located within the DSL range, subject to evaluation, of a DSL-equipped
serving or central office in order for DSL to operate effectively. This
distance will vary depending on the specific type and condition of the
telephone line.
Why
is distance important with DSL?
Your phone lines terminate
at PhilCom's Central Office. This distance, (the length of the line between
your location and PhilCom Business Office), is a very important factor
to determine whether or not you can get DSL, and at what speed. Distance
limit for speeds can vary widely from company to company.
What hardware do I need to use DSL?
To use DSL you need
a DSL modem and a Network Interface Card (NIC). You also need a POTS splitter
in order to use POTS service since PhilCom's DSL is "voice and internet"
capable.
Can
I use different DSL hardware?
We recommend that you
use the PhilCom DSL equipment since other brands might be incompatible
with PhilCom's DSLAM equipment.
Can I do the installation of the equipment
myself instead of PhilCom?
No. Since the equipment
are leased to the client, PhilCom will have to guarantee the safe installation
of the units.
What is the type of DSL
used by PhilCom?
PhilCom DSL uses the
Rate Adaptive DSL or RADSL. RADSL is an ADSL technology in which software
is able to determine the rate at which signals can be transmitted on a
given customer phone line and adjust the delivery rate accordingly.
What's
the catch?
The problem with DSL
is that it's new, it's not available in all areas. You may or may not
be able to get DSL service. The best thing to do is to call PhilCom Sales
to check if you can get DSL. If not, we may be able to give you an estimate
of when it will be available. You can reach us by dialing on your PhilCom
phone Customer Service 188 or e-mail us @ dsl-sales@philcom.ph.
What
do I do if my DSL line goes down?
PhilCom DSL has a 24x7
Helpdesk to assist clients. We also have an escalation procedure to answer
technical problems.
