Nursery Operations
The BFI
nursery commenced operation in 1990. It is situated on a 5 - hectare
area with a capacity to produce 5.2 million fast-growing tree seedlings
using polythylene plastic bags and Brazilian root trainers a year.
It is sufficiently equipped with facilities such as: overhead irrigation
system, greenhouse potting/mixing shed, hardening/pricking shed,
propagator, and shading system.

Plantation Development
BFI has
a plantable are of 21,000 hectares of mostly denuded grasslands.
Its annual planting target is set at 900 hectares. The expected
rotation period of the plantations is 15 years.
3.
Engineering and Infrastructure Development
In support
of the nursery and plantation operations, BFI has put in place the
following essential infrastructure facilities such as: access road,
buildings, rubber dams, fire lookout towers, bridges, irrigation
system, and elevated potbeds.
4.
Forestry Extension and Cooperative Planting
As part
of BFI's environmental awareness program and to further promote
tree plantations is the free distribution of seedlings to civic
organizations, schools, and other community and religious groups.
Aside from the seedlings distribution, BFI is also providing the
necessary technical advice to the different recipients of he seedlings
as well as to private individuals interested in tree plantation
establishment to ensure good survival and good quality growth of
seedlings planted.
5.
Research & Development
BFI is
expanding its research thrust and scope utilizing the whole plantation
area as its wide laboratory. Local and international collaborators
like the University of the Philippines at Los Baños (UPLB),
Australian Tree Seed Centre (ATSC) and Australian Centre for International
AGricultural Research (ACIAR) work hand-in hand with BFI in developing
state of the art technology for plantation management and development.
6.
Integrated Social Forestry and Upland Agriculture Development Support
BFI extends
assistance to farming communities within its area following the
integrated Social Forestry program of the DENR.
7.
Community Development, Liaison and Livelihood Support Projects
Community
understanding of BFI's aims, policies and benefits, it can provide
to the community leads to better acceptance and support. BFI provides
community development support and assistance, i.e., water system
facilities, animal dispersal, input support for upland farming communities
within its area.
8.
Forest Protection
BFI's
forest protection component consists of two major activities, namely
forest fire prevention and control and law enforcement.
9.
Training
As part
of the BFI's institutional strengthening, a continuing staff development
and training has been put in place for all technical as well as
administrative staff to improve their skills and competence in carrying
out their respective functions.
